Our gut is not only busy extracting nutrients and energy from what we eat, but also accounts for about 2/3 of our immune system! It is a major player in our body, but interestingly, we often neglect this specific organ or are even angry at it because we feel bloated or having a tummy ache.
But did you know that the state of out gut has an effect on the rest of our body?
There is more and more research about the importance of a healthy gut on our physical and mental well-being.
Various environmental influences, aging, daily stress and lifestyle affect our gut’s performance. An unhealthy diet, for example, can upset the balance between good and bad bacteria in our gut. This, in turn, can lead to a shortage of important substances like our happiness hormone serotonin! Researchers are now looking into how the wrong gut bacteria can increase the likelihood of depression.
A wrong diet, some medicines and stress can further enhance the acidity of our body which negatively affects our metabolism and the proper functioning of our organs, including the gut.
A healthy lifestyle is the basis for our well-being, but sometimes it is not enough. It seems that our lives becomes more and more stressful and while our body is a fascinating miracle, dealing with a lot of things that are bad for us on it’s own, it sometimes needs some extra support – especially when the balance is already disturbed.
